Moulding our JW Children
by angel.face inevery year, at the beginning of the school year i prepare a letter for my daughter's teachers saying 'we are jws don't celebrate this....no anthem....here are some suggestions..blah blah".
and here's our 'jws and education' brochure from 1969, a bit outdated but you know, it's spiritual food at the proper time.
besides, its an easy placement.

I spoke to the teacher when my daughter started at school the first year, then I woke up, realised I was in a cult and have not had that conversation since.

UK newspaper interest in "mentally diseased", any Witnesses want to come forward?
by cedars infollowing the recent activity surrounding the "mentally diseased" apostate article, a major uk newspaper has expressed an interest in covering the story.
the correspondent as been told about this forum, and he is particularly interested in hearing from those inside the organisation, as i think few people are aware of how much unrest there is actually within witness ranks at the teachings of the society.. would anybody like to be used as a source, either anonymously or otherwise?
if so, it might be worthwhile saying a few words on this thread.

This is true cedars. In the past year, there I know of two in our congregation who have faded for what the society would term as apostasy. Including myself and my husband, we would constitute 5% of the congregtion. These are just the ones that I know of.

OK, well a bit of my background. I'm a female, born in to the religion and I am in my mid 30s. I am married and have children. My children are at an age where the religion is becoming a real issue. They attend Christmas and birthday parties, I want them to have as normal a life as possible. At the same time they have to get their young minds around the complexity of who they can and can't talk to about different things. A typical question from my daughter: "So nanna doesn't mind snowmen but she would get upset if we had tinsel in the house? But why?" Literally the smallest thing could result in a complete breakdown in our family communication.
I sat through that Watchtower study. I listened to the people around me say the most awful things about me. It was not nice. The only reason I continue to have anything to do with that cult is that if my parents are forced to make the decision outlines in next week's Watchtower study, I know where their loyalties will lie. And it will break their hearts.
Sometimes I think I am mentally diseased, I am certainly mentally screwed up, because despite the fact that I'm a good mother and a law abiding citizen with a professional job, this all counts for nothing if I am not a Jehovah's Witness. Not to my parents anyway. Who put that thought in their heads? The leadership of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Next week's Watchtower:

I would be willing to talk to someone. I am in the UK.
I am a Jehovah's Witness, currently undergoing counselling to help me break the news to my parents that I am 'mentally diseased' aka apostate.

A quote I liked from Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds
by Mickey mouse inmen, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.. true of jehovah's witnesses i think.
i've bought the book and i'm looking forward to reading it.. extraordinary popular delusions and the madness of crowds is a history of mass movements and crazes by the scottish journalist charles mackay, first published in 1841. the book chronicles its subjects in three parts: "national delusions", "peculiar follies", and "philosophical delusions".
despite its journalistic and rather sensational style, the book has gathered a body of academic support as a work of considerable importance in the history of social psychology and psychopathology.. the subjects of mackay's debunking include economic bubbles, alchemy, crusades, witch-hunts, prophecies, fortune-telling, magnetisers (influence of imagination in curing disease), shape of hair and beard (influence of politics and religion on), murder through poisoning, haunted houses, popular follies of great cities, popular admiration of great thieves, duels, and relics.

Present day writers on economics, such as Andrew Tobias and Michael Lewis, laud the three chapters on economic bubbles.

I used Steve Hassan's methods to reach my husband.
First off, take it sllllooooowwww. The aim is not to show them the flaws in their beliefs but help them break down the thought stopping processed so that they can see it for themselves.
Ask questions, don't make statements. If possible, continue to attend meetings with him. You need for him not to see you as the enemy and unfortunately JW spouses are trained to see loyalty even to their spouse as secondary to Jehovah(s organization).
